Lake Boat Rogaining: Frequently Asked Questions/FAQ
Welcome to the ultimate strategy game on the water! To help you navigate the rules before you navigate the lake, we’ve put together this quick FAQ.
⏱️ Time, Distance & Strategy
How long is the event?
The race lasts exactly 8 hours. Pace yourself, plan your strategy wisely, and make sure you're back before the clock runs out!
What distance will we cover?
The distance is highly variable and can range up to 60 km. Your total mileage is entirely up to you and depends on:
- The route your team chooses to map out.
- The weather and wind conditions on the lake.
- Your team's paddling speed.
- How quickly and accurately you can locate the control points.
Are we required to follow a specific path?
Not at all! There is absolutely no "right course" or set path. Your team has total freedom to design and navigate any route you decide across the lake.
Are all control points worth the same?
No, control points have different point values.
- Easy & fast checkpoints are closer or simpler to find, but offer fewer points.
- Harder checkpoints require more effort, better navigation, or longer paddling, but reward you with much higher point values.
Is the fastest boat guaranteed to win?
Absolutely not! Rogaining is a strategy game first and a race second. More often than not, the victory goes to the team with the smartest route, not just the fastest boat. Balancing risk, reward, and checkpoint values will beat raw speed every time.
👥 Team Composition & Dynamics
Can our team split up to hit multiple control points at the same time?
NO! Division of labor won't work here! Rogaining is a true team sport. Team should check all together at one point!
⚠️ The 2-Minute Rule: All team members must visit the exact same control points together. Every single team member must punch/check into the control point within 2 minutes of each other.
How many people can be on a team?
- Minimum & Optimal: 2 members.
- Maximum: Up to 4 members (with a maximum of 4 boats per team).
How is the "MIX" category defined?
If your team has a combination of genders, you are in the MIX category. Simply put:
- Any predominantly male team with at least one woman is a MIX team.
- Any predominantly female team with at least one man is a MIX team.
K1 and K2 boat classes?
If there is at least one K2 kayak in team it is considered as K2 team (K2+K1+K1 or K2+K1)
K1 consists only of Single kayaks
What about Canoes and SUP boards?
The same as with Kayak classes. C3 will be counted as C2.
🎒 Gear, Dress Code & Rules
What is the recommended dress code?
Safety and protection are key! We highly recommend wearing:
- Long sleeves and leggings to protect your skin. Floating vests all the time. Teams which members are not wearing floating vests will disqulified.
- Sneakers, running/trail shoes, or sturdy water shoes.
- Why? You will be navigating through sharp lake reeds (niedres), and the right clothing will keep you from getting scratched up or injured.
What navigation gear do we need to bring?
Make sure your team is equipped with a compass, a ruler (for measuring distances on the map), and a permanent marker to plot out your routes.
Do we have to get out of the boat to find points?
All control points are completely reachable from the water side. However, you are allowed to get creative! If it saves you time, you can absolutely drag your boat by land to take over and cut across peninsulas.
